TIMING is everything in racing and for Darwin, it couldn’t have been better.

After a flat 10th in the Prince Consort Stakes and two tame fifth-place runs at the three-year-old non-two level, the colt returned Saturday, June 20, 2026 with fire in his eyes.

Sporting a tongue tie and a new attitude, Darwin announced his St Leger credentials with an emphatic win in the Mr Lover Lover Trophy over nine furlongs and 25 yards (1,820m).

Ridden by Tajay Suckoo for trainer Richard Azan, Darwin produced the most mature run of his eight-start career. It was his second win, but his first statement.

Suckoo played it like a chess master. While Jo Boxer, with Jaheim Anderson, and God’s Plan, under Emelio McLean, duelled up front, Darwin hugged the inside rail, saving every inch of ground and every ounce of energy.

Patient, quiet, and waiting, the move came at the half-mile (800m) pole with a nudge from Suckoo, still hugging the paint. Then, with three furlongs (600) to run, the tap was turned on and what happened next was authority.

Darwin surged past Jo Boxer and God’s Plan like they were standing still. The race was over long before the wire. He powered home 14½ lengths clear in 1:55.2, carving splits of 24.4, 48.1, 1:12.4, 1:39.3. Jo Boxer held second, God’s Plan third. Everyone else was racing for minor money.

With the Jamaica St Leger looming and the Derby next on the calendar, Darwin just bought himself a seat at the Classic table. The coming weeks will tell if this is a peak or a launch pad. But one thing is certain after Saturday:
Darwin has matured, and Jamaica’s three-year-old division has a new serious contender.
