Supernatural Power, Nautical Star on collision course

Forget the other four runners as this isn’t a race — it’s a war with two combatants.

The 25th SVL Anniversary Trophy is $1.4 million over one mile (1,600m) for three-year-olds and upward, but nobody’s talking money. All week at Caymanas Park, two names have been bouncing off the grandstand walls: Supernatural Power (USA) and Nautical Star (USA). Everything else is just background noise.

Supernatural Power doesn’t run like a filly. She runs like a force of nature. Gray coat gleaming, ross Traffic blood in her veins, Supernatural Power is the nightmare every trainer hopes to avoid.

She races from a new barn today as Adrian Prince took the reins from many-time champion conditioner Philip Feanny.

On April 25, same mile, same track —Supernatural Power won 11 lengths in an impressive time of 1:35.30 minutes. That wasn’t a race, it was rather an execution. Before that, she was second to
Rideallday in a record Ian Levy Cup, trading punches at eight-and-a-half furlongs (1,900m) and refusing to break. She’s fast. She’s relentless. She’s peaking.

Nautical Star crossed oceans to get here, and he came to rule. The six-year-old dark bay/brown by Dixie Chatter landed on Jamaican soil and immediately announced himself with two wins from four starts.

Last seen finishing in third place behind Legacy Isle in a record Eros Trophy over seven furlongs (1,400m) on June 6, but the clock said he was flying — the race ended in 1:22.3 and Nautical Star finished in 1:23.2.

In the mornings he’s been training like a monster. Every breeze screams the same thing: I’m ready. Speed to burn, heart for days, and ice in his veins, Nautical Star is a live threat.

Don Kwesi, Sensational Soul, Sheer Delight, and Barnaby are the other runners in the field.

Don Kwesi walks in with his chest puffed out with three straight wins. The four-year-old bay colt by Sensational Slam has been chewing up lesser company but today isn’t lesser company. This is where the streak meets a buzzsaw called class. The story ends here for Don Kwesi.

Sensational Soul is outgunned and Sheer Delight can be safely bypassed. They’re just numbers on the programme.

Then there i s Barnaby by Tapiture, who has two wins from five starts this year. Fifth last out behind Funcaandun, but the mile is his love language. If Supernatural Power and Nautical Star get tangled up trading haymakers from gate to wire, Barnaby is the one lurking in the shadows, ready to steal the crown.
