Champo’s quiet resurgence: Omar Walker proving class is permanent
Jockey Omar Walker’s story has become one of resilience, consistency, and quiet brilliance.
Known affectionately as “Champo”, he remains the only six-time champion jockey in Caymanas Park history — a feat that alone should cement his legacy. His résumé sparkles with Jamaica’s most prestigious races, including the Triple Crown aboard the legendary She’s A Maneater.
With 1,283 lifetime winners to his name, Walker’s career is there for all to see and envy. Yet many argue he has never truly received the recognition befitting his accomplishments.
Despite that underappreciation, Walker has never let it affect his professionalism. While others complain about mounts, Walker lets his riding do the talking. His recent resurgence with trainer Anthony Nunes underscores both his talent and commitment.
The evidence came in a 9-day burst, June 20 – Viceroy Trophy where he delivered a masterful ride on Sir Don, out-duelling Reyan Lewis on Of A Revolution in a driving finish.
On June 27 in the Supreme Ventures 25th Anniversary Trophy, Walker showcased tactical brilliance again, sending
Nautical Star straight to the lead before kicking clear for a commanding 7½-length win over Barnaby.
On June 28, Walker timed his late surge perfectly on Dutchess, sweeping past Summer Palace and Margarita in the stretch. Three wins, three different scenarios, one common thread — Walker seized every opportunity.
What’s striking is how few chances he got. Only three rides on June 27 and a single mount on June 28. For a jockey of Walker’s calibre, that’s minimal track time. It raises the question: Is Caymanas fully utilising one of its greatest riders? These performances suggest that, given more chances, Walker can still dominate the track like he did during his six championship reigns.
Walker’s journey reflects both the challenges and triumphs of a champion who continues to prove his worth. The sport moved on, new faces emerged, and rides got tighter. But class doesn’t fade. Whether these recent winners signal a full rebound or just flashes of brilliance, one thing is clear: When Omar Walker gets a good horse, he still knows exactly what to do.
