Girvano, Phenomenal Power headline Clovis Metcalfe feature
The fifth running of the $1.25-million Clovis Mtecalfe Trophy, an Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward, takes centre stage on tomorrow’s 10-race card. The race has attracted a field of 10 going 7½ furlongs (1,500m).
The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a look at the runners and their chances of winning.
1. FLORINDIA (USA): (5 dk b/br m Gone Astray – Flaring) – Was an impressive 7¾-length winner when stretched out to 7 furlongs on February 28. She failed to follow up when sixth last time, but this distance is no problem for her. Expect a bold bid if she gets a good break.
2.FEARLESS SOUL: (6 ch h Soul Warrior – Rumble) – Out of form and outclassed here. Cannot be recommended for a winning run.
3. MOJITO: (6 gr h Savoy Stomp – Fiftyshadesofray) – Disappointed as the favourite last time out, finishing fifth over a mile on June 13. But he’s trained really well coming into this. Given his class and talent, Mojito should be in the running for top honours. The cut-back to 7½ furlongs helps.
4. ROYAL POPPY: (USA) (6 ch m Classic Empire – M’Dearest) – Makes her local debut here. Has trained fairly well, but winning first time against this lot isn’t on the table. Will need the run.
5. INTRESTNTIMESAHEAD: (5 b h Bold Conquest – My Friend Lucy) – Finished third behind Blue Vinyl and
Supremasi over a mile on June 13, coming off a four-month layoff. Intrestntimesahead should be much sharper now and ready to put in another good fight at this trip.
6. PROVIDENT: (5 ch h Sensational Slam – Dream Point) – No form to suggest he can win this.
7. SUPREMASI: (5 b h Savoy Stomp – Beware Baby) – Outsprinted by stablemates Sir Don, Of A Revolution, and
Neo Star at 5½ furlongs on June 20. Better suited to this 7½ furlong distance, but a winning run is unlikely against these.
8. PHENOMENAL POWER (USA): (3 dk b c Violence – Drinking Dixie) – The three-year-old wildcard. Phenomenal Power won three races from four starts on local soil. He was impressive beating Pepper Stepper over 5 furlongs round in 59.0 on June 6. Being stretched out for the first time, but he’s poised for a winning run if he stays.
9. GIRVANO (USA): (4 b c Girvin – Summer In Midway) – On paper, looks the horse to beat. Girvano finished second behind a record run by Legacy Isle in the Eros Trophy over 7 furlongs on June 6. Has trained really well for this and with nothing in the line-up as good as Legacy Isle, Girvano should win this race. Class tells.
10. DIESEL TRAIN (USA): (4 b g Paynter – Mammee) – A winner last time but not expected to repeat against this class.
