St Leger Sunday: Pretenders fade, champions prove it
The 2026 Jamaica St Leger Classic is set for Sunday, July 5, and this is where talk stops and truth begins. Over the gruelling trip of 10 furlongs (2,000m), pretenders fade and champions prove it.
This is the Futurity for native-bred three-year-olds, with $4.5 million on the line. But money isn’t the story. The Triple Crown is.

All eyes will be on the two Guineas winners. Dream Catcher stamped herself the queen of the fillies with victory in the 1000 Guineas. Salute The Don announced himself the king of the colts after taking the 2000 Guineas.
Both enter Sunday Classics wanting to keep their Triple Crown quest alive. Win Sunday, and either one keeps the dream rolling toward the Derby, the final jewel in August. Lose Sunday, and the Triple Crown talk ends right here.
But this St Leger won’t be handed to them. The two-turn distance is a different test. Speed from the Guineas won’t be enough. Stamina, patience, and a smart ride will decide it.
Below, The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at each runner and their chances of winning:
1. SENOR BISCOTTI: (3 b c Savoy Stomp – Baby P) – Disappointed when finishing sixth in the 2000 Guineas. Bred to stay, Senor Biscotti is expected to love this extended 10 furlongs. If he settles early, he’s a sneaky place chance at odds.

2. BIGGER BOSS: (3 b c Bern Identity – Woman Is Boss) – Never a factor in the 2000 Guineas and facing basically the same rivals here. No form to suggest he can turn it around over a longer trip.
3. DREAM CATCHER: (3 b f Bern Identity – Double Jeopardy) – Lived up to her name with a performance of pure class to capture the 1000 Guineas on June 6. She’s continued to prove superiority over her peers. This is her toughest task yet — colts and geldings, 10 furlongs, Triple Crown pressure. But she’ll have no problem going two-turn and should put up a real fight in deep stretch. If she stays, she’s very dangerous.
4. SO LUCKY AM I: (3 b c Successful Native – Ashtrid) – Outclassed here. No realistic chance of winning this race.

5. I LOVE BIRDIE: (3 b c Savoy Stomp – Birdie My Love) – Came from behind to win the Father’s Day Special over 7 furlongs (1,400m) on June 27. He’ll love this two-turn race on breeding, but lacks the class of the main principals. Honest, but not a threat for top honours.
6. SALUTE THE DON: (3 ch c Aveenu Malcainu – Abicadabby) – Turned the tables on stablemate Stardom to win the 2000 Guineas on June 7. Salute The Don has never finished worse than third in seven career starts. He was second behind Stardom in The Kingston, then got by him by ¾ length in the Guineas. Many pegged him as a sprinter, but he showed stamina. That resilience could prove decisive in the St Leger.

7. GOD’S PLAN: (3 ch c Aveenu Malcainu – Fearless Abi) – Expected to figure in the 2000 Guineas after third in The Kingston behind stablemates Stardom and Salute The Don. But he finished seventh in the Guineas, which makes his St Leger chances very slim.
8. WE JAMMIN (3 ch c Bern Identity – Jammin) – Missed the 2000 Guineas due to injury. Last year’s champion Tow-year-old We Jammin finished down the track in The Kingston before being sidelined. Timely prepared for re-entry and has already shown he can beat these. If 100 per cent fit, he’s the wildcard who could make a winning return. Big “if” on fitness.

9. STRONG AVEENU: (3 b c Aveenu Malcainu – Ruby Rose) – Finished third in the 2000 Guineas after a strong battle in deep stretch. Strong Aveenu is an improving sort with a grinding style that suits 10 furlongs. Won’t have Dream Catcher’s turn of foot, but he’ll keep coming.
10. STARDOM: (3 b c Sensational Slam – Trinket Box) – Entered the 2000 Guineas as favourite after his Kingston win. His relish for longer trips made him the prime contender, but he failed to nab stablemate Salute The Don. This two-turn race is right up his alley. Expect him to be finishing best of all.
11. THE MAESTRO: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Moonlight Brew) – Can safely be bypassed.

12. LONDON SPIRIT: (3 b cBern Identity – Blufield) – Best hope is for a minor placing. Not expected to challenge the front-runners.
13. MOHANLAL: (3 b c Casual Trick – Raise Your Voice) – Finished 4th in the 2000 Guineas. By pedigree he’s going to enjoy this extended distance and is expected to make a brave bid. Could outstay some fancied runners late.
