All In The Family (Part 2)
Style Observer Gardening (SOG) returns to Keystone, St Catherine, to further explore the garden of customs broker St Hope Plummer. Here, a passion for horticulture has blossomed into a family affair shared with his wife Ionie, his son Ainsworth and granddaughter Christina. From the breathtaking blooms of his lilies, orchids, and roses to the fresh watermelons, mangoes, sorrel, and starfruit that define a farm-to-table lifestyle, St Hope’s collection is as rewarding as it is beautiful.
“Spending time in the garden allows me to unwind and appreciate the beauty of nature. Seeing the flowers bloom and flourish brings me a sense of accomplishment and joy, while the tranquil environment provides comfort and peace of mind after a busy day,” Plummer said.
Cultivating that sense of peace has been a true labour of love, requiring dedicated daily attention. For Plummer, the secret to success lies in consistency.
“Daily care, including watering, pruning, clipping, and monitoring the plants’ condition, is essential. Paying close attention to the needs of each plant and addressing any issues early, helps ensure healthy growth and long-lasting blooms,” Plummer noted.
His blueprint for a personal oasis is simple: Trust the process, stay diligent with watering and maintenance, and practise patience. A true garden, after all, is never built in a hurry.
“It is important to choose plants suited to your environment, establish a regular watering schedule, and make time for routine maintenance,” Plummer advises. “Consistent care, combined with patience and a genuine love for gardening, will eventually produce rewarding results.”
