Phenomenal Power shatters 43-year track record in Clovis Metcalfe Trophy win
PHENOMENAL Power erased 43 years of history at Caymanas Park on Saturday, smashing Sky Train’s 7½ furlongs (1,500m) track record of 1:29.2 with a blistering 1:29.0 to win the $1.25-million Clovis Metcalfe Trophy.
The Adrian Prince-trained, three-year-old, American-bred dark bay colt Phenomenal Power led from the gate under Raddesh Roman and never gave the field a chance. He dictated the pace down the backstretch, kicked on around the turn, and left his rivals wobbling in deep stretch.
Sky Train’s mark from May 7, 1983 looked untouchable but Phenomenal Power made it look an easy, afternoon stroll on a Saturday evening.
He crossed the line 11¼ lengths clear, easy, commanding, and historic. Diesel Train (Tajay Suckoo) was second while
Royal Poppy (Dane Dawkins) was third.
Racing is to continue on Sunday with the 100th running of the $4.5-million Jamaica St Leger Classic, the second jewel in the Triple Crown series. Dream Catcher and Salute The Don are chasing glory after winning the 1000 and 2000 Guineas races, respectively.
