Over 40 Jamaican juniors to benefit from inaugural Smash Jamaica badminton tournament
KINGSTON, Jamaica — More than 40 Jamaican junior badminton players are set to gain valuable international experience when the inaugural Smash Jamaica 2026 tournament kicks off from August 5-18, with the Jamaica Badminton Association (JBA) describing the event as a major step in its long-term plan to elevate the sport locally.
Smash Jamaica will feature five tournaments, beginning with the Jamaica International (August 5-9), a Badminton World Federation (BWF) international series event that offers world-ranking points. Also on the schedule are the Carebaco Junior and Senior Team Championships (August 9-12) and the Carebaco Junior and Senior Individuals (August 14-18).
Speaking at the launch at Janga’s Soundbar & Grill, JBA President Vishwanauth Tolan said the initiative is designed to bring world-class competition to Jamaica rather than relying solely on costly overseas exposure for local athletes.
“Our board was elected in January and shortly after taking office, I think we decided to do something bold,” he shared.
He explained that the association has set ambitious goals of qualifying Jamaican players for the Olympic Games and winning Pan American gold medals within the next six years, making international competition a critical part of athlete development.
“They need to compete against higher-level players, they need to experience world-class badminton and they ultimately have to develop the belief and desire to become global champions,” he said.
Approximately 30 senior local players are expected to compete across the tournament series. Tolan noted that the event is also expected to generate wider economic benefits through increased visitor arrivals, higher hotel occupancy, greater international exposure and expanded opportunities for sports tourism and institutional growth.
He also highlighted the tournament’s significance in reviving regional competitions, including the Carebaco Senior Team Championships, which have not been staged for more than a decade. Additionally, the Carebaco Junior and Senior Individuals will be held together for the first time in approximately eight years.
All events will be hosted at the Alfred Sangster Auditorium at the University of Technology (UTech), where upgrades to international lighting standards are being undertaken through support from the university and FosRich. Tolan said the improvements will benefit not only badminton but other indoor sports that use the facility.

Addressing the athletes, he urged them to embrace the opportunity.
“This event is for you. Dream big, compete fearlessly, learn from every match, represent Jamaica with pride, and of course, we’re not making anybody come here to play Carebaco and beat us so we’re going to win…It’s the beginning of a new chapter for Jamaica badminton,” President Tolan said.
The Jamaica International will feature 26 Jamaican players alongside more than 65 overseas competitors representing Guyana, Poland, Malta, Egypt, the Cayman Islands, France, Brazil, India, Canada, Switzerland, Bermuda, Suriname, Bangladesh, Trinidad and Tobago, Spain, Portugal, the United States, Slovenia and Peru.
Tolan also thanked the tournament’s growing list of partners, noting that nearly 20 organisations have already committed their support, while additional sponsorship is still being sought.
Sponsors include the UTech, Sports Development Foundation (SDF), FosRich, Aris Oaks, EdgeChem, BPAC, 876 Stream, Hawkeye, Bresheh, Janga’s, Jamaica Observer, Jamaica Tourist Board, Jamaica Olympic Association, Ministry of Sport, Independence Park Limited, Quantum Concepts, Christar Villas Hotel, Harbour Wines and Spirits, Vapcon, the Social Development Commission and Pure Water.
Sports Development Foundation General Manager Alan Beckford praised the association’s vision and innovation, describing Smash Jamaica as the type of initiative national sporting bodies should pursue.

“I see you have innovated things. I’ve been to a couple of your conferences and meetings that you have had and I think it is something that other associations should also try to emulate. And this is the kind of thing that the Sports Development Foundation wants to see all of our associations doing— doing things differently,” Beckford said.
He also encouraged the participating athletes to perform well when the tournament gets under way.
“I expect you to represent us well at Carebaco, and then we have the international tournament so good luck to all the players,” Beckford said.
The public is being encouraged to attend the events and support the continued development of badminton and sport in Jamaica.
