Gas retailers group condemns violent attacks, calls for strengthened security measures
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Gasolene Retailers Association (JGRA) has condemned the recent robberies and violent attacks targeting service stations across the island, describing the incidents as deeply concerning and calling for strengthened security measures to protect employees and customers.
The statement comes after a pump attendant was shot while on duty at a service station on Wednesday. Two of the three men believed to have been involved in the incident have since been fatally shot during a police-led operation.

The association said the attacks have resulted in serious harm, including one employee who remains in critical condition. It extended sympathy to the employee’s family and expressed hope for her full and speedy recovery.
In response to the incidents, the JGRA is urging its members to exercise heightened vigilance in their daily operations, citing the increasing vulnerability of the sector.
The association is also appealing to its law enforcement partners to maintain consistent patrols at service stations, despite their already stretched resources, to help deter criminal activity and reassure staff and customers.
Additionally, the JGRA is encouraging members to upgrade their closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems wherever possible. It said enhanced surveillance would significantly improve investigative capabilities and support the efforts of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) and the JamaicaEye Programme, with which the association has an established memorandum of understanding.
The association noted that service stations have largely transitioned away from cash handling and are moving toward a cashless model, with most transactions now conducted using credit and debit cards.
Describing the recent shooting of a hardworking breadwinner as a “tragic and senseless act”, the JGRA said the incident demands a swift resolution.
As an added safety measure, the association announced that customers will now be required to wind down their vehicle windows when conducting transactions with customer service agents.
The JGRA said it remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of its members, employees and customers and will continue working closely with national security partners to address the ongoing threats.
