As Jamaica prepares to celebrate its 64th year of Independence in August, local streetwear brand Jamroc Dept is marking the occasion with a limited-edition clothing collection that blends national pride with contemporary fashion.

The 64 Years of Jamaica Independence Collection: 1962-2026, officially launched on June 5, is the latest offering from founder and creative director Fernando Edwards, who says the six-piece collection was designed to celebrate Jamaica’s past while embracing its future.

“The collection features six pieces. Each design carries its own identity while remaining connected through the shared themes of Jamaican pride, independence, heritage and modern streetwear,” Edwards told the Observer Online.

The collection forms part of the lead-up to Jamaica’s Independence celebrations and has already generated strong interest among customers.

According to Edwards, the response has exceeded expectations, with many embracing the collection’s elevated take on traditional Independence apparel.

“The feedback has been extremely encouraging. Customers have responded strongly to the way the collection combines Jamaican identity with a more elevated, contemporary streetwear presentation. The bold colours, jersey-inspired silhouettes, cultural details and the meaning behind the designs have created genuine conversation,” he said.

He added that supporters have praised the collection for moving beyond the familiar.

“Many people have said the pieces feel celebratory without being predictable, which was important to me because I wanted the collection to represent where Jamaican culture has been, where it is now, and where it is going,” he shared.

Rather than creating clothing intended solely for Independence Day celebrations, Edwards hopes the collection will resonate with Jamaicans year-round, both locally and abroad.

“My ultimate hope is for the collection to become more than something people wear for one day. I want it to give Jamaicans at home and throughout the diaspora a meaningful way to carry their identity with pride,” he said.

The designer also sees the collection as another step in the evolution of Jamroc Dept as an internationally recognised brand rooted in Jamaican culture.

“I want it to continue strengthening Jamroc Dept’s position as a global streetwear brand rooted in Jamaican culture. This collection is part of a larger story that begins with Independence and continues through the brand’s upcoming rugby activation, showing how fashion, sport, heritage and community can all work together,” said Edwards.

In keeping with the brand’s emphasis on exclusivity, the Independence collection is being released in limited quantities.

Edwards explained that the rollout began with a soft launch for subscribers to the brand’s email list, where just 64 pieces were made available in honour of Jamaica’s 64th anniversary of Independence.

“Following that initial release, the collection is being introduced in controlled, limited production runs, with up to 200 pieces planned for the broader launch,” he said.

While additional production runs may be considered if demand warrants, Edwards stressed that the collection will remain intentionally exclusive.
