Balloons Botanica: blooms, balloons and business

Balloons Botanica: blooms, balloons and business

A little pressure is all it took to inflate a side hustle into a niche gifting business. After repeated encouragement from her entrepreneurial partner, Sophia Wyke Cook launched Balloon Botanica, a business specialising in bespoke balloon and floral arrangements for birthdays, graduations, gender reveals, and other celebrations.

“My partner was always prompting me to start a business because he’s an entrepreneur. He was always telling me, you know, I need to start a side hustle apart from my nine-to-five so that I can make a little bit more money,” she told the Jamaica Observer in an interview.

Originally from Trinidad and Tobago, Wyke Cook moved to Jamaica in 2020 to pursue a degree in physical therapy. While considering what kind of business to start, inspiration struck in late 2025 as she scrolled through
Instagram. An overseas business specialising in balloon arrangements kept appearing on her feed, prompting her to learn more about the concept. After discovering that the business owner offered online courses, Wyke Cook enrolled and began learning the craft. Describing herself as “a DIY girlie”, she said the creative process immediately appealed to her. After travelling overseas, she purchased the supplies needed to launch Balloon Botanica, believing the concept filled a gap in Jamaica’s gifting market.

“I never really saw anything like that being offered in Jamaica. So I said, Okay, maybe it’s a little niche… for graduation and special events, for something a little bit different,” she told Sunday Finance.

Before starting the business last year she had never worked with balloons or floral arrangements, and admitted she “didn’t even know what some of the flowers were called”. Her first creation was for her business page on Instagram, where she showcased a mixed flowerpot balloon arrangement to introduce the brand and attract potential customers. The first official sale followed shortly after for Valentine’s Day. Instead of traditional bouquets or gift baskets, Balloon Botanica specialises in decorative balloon arrangements that combine faux flowers, personalised messages, and keepsakes inside oversized transparent balloons. The business also creates “gumball” balloons — clear balloons filled with smaller colourful balloons — as well as gender reveal pop balloons, and customised gifts for birthdays, graduations and other milestone celebrations.

“I wouldn’t say that I have a specific clientele. It’s more catered towards persons who are looking for a gift that is a little bit different, a little bespoke, a luxurious type thing,” she said.

The gumball balloons start at $3,500, while the signature floral arrangements enclosed within the balloons start at $10,000. Despite the polished final product, learning to manipulate balloons into long-lasting arrangements proved to be one of the business’ biggest challenges.

“It looks simple, however, it takes a lot of time and practise. So, I had to put a lot of work into research as well as practising to try to get the hang of it to ensure that the product actually lasts and looks good,” she said.

Most materials, including the faux flowers used in the arrangements, are sourced online. To avoid inventory shortages Wyke Cook orders supplies well in advance, and in bulk whenever possible. Although shipping costs have increased, she said they have not materially affected the business. Orders are placed through Instagram, with customers able to choose pickup or delivery within Kingston for an additional fee. For now, she has deliberately limited deliveries to the Corporate Area while she researches how to better preserve the delicate arrangements during longer journeys. Looking ahead, Wyke Cook hopes to expand beyond individual customers by partnering with corporate Jamaica to provide employee appreciation and client gifts. She is also developing ideas to collaborate with real estate agents by creating decorative arrangements for new homeowners, as she continues growing Balloon Botanica beyond its beginnings as a side hustle.

Balloon Botanica’s floral balloon arrangements combine faux flowers, personalised messages, and decorative packaging for occasions such as Mother’s Day and birthdays.
