Christopher Ellis celebrates Ja’s sound system legacy on new single

For Christopher Ellis, Jamaica’s sound system culture isn’t simply the inspiration behind his latest single — it’s part of his earliest musical memories.

The reggae singer has released My Sound, an energetic tribute to the selectors, sound systems, and clash culture that helped shape reggae’s global identity.

Produced by Grammy Award-winning artiste and producer Damian “Jr Gong” Marley, and released through Ghetto Youths International, the single blends classic reggae sensibilities with a contemporary edge while celebrating one of Jamaica’s most influential musical traditions.

Ellis says his connection to the culture predates his own career as a recording artiste.

“For me, sound system culture is something I was involved in from before I even became an artiste,” he said. “This song is more expressive of what sound system culture involves — clash, friendly war, and everything that comes with it.”

The connection runs even deeper through his father, rocksteady legend Alton Ellis, whose work with sound systems introduced him to the culture from an early age.

“My father used to record dubplates for sounds and he would tell me to do the second verse,” Ellis recalled with a laugh. “Sometimes the sounds wouldn’t even want that, but they were a little apprehensive to tell him they preferred him alone on the dub. Anyway, this is where it started for me.”

Those early experiences have continued to influence his music, with Ellis noting that previous singles including
Still Go A Dance and Rub A Dub have already found favour within the global sound system community.

The release arrives as Ellis continues to build momentum internationally following standout performances at SXSW London and a sold-out headline appearance at London’s iconic Jazz Café earlier this year, milestones that have further established him as one of reggae’s most compelling contemporary voices.

Built on a driving, uptempo reggae rhythm, My Sound captures the energy of Jamaica’s dancehall spaces while paying homage to the sound systems that have long served as the foundation for reggae’s growth and global reach.

With Damian Marley’s modern production complementing Ellis’s authentic delivery, the track bridges generations of reggae fans while remaining firmly rooted in the island’s musical heritage.

As Christopher Ellis continues to carve out his own legacy, My Sound serves as both a celebration of Jamaica’s enduring sound system culture and a reminder that some of reggae’s strongest voices are still drawing inspiration from the traditions that shaped them.

My Sound is now available on all major digital streaming platforms.
