KINGSTON, Jamaica  —  Opposition Spokesperson on Creative Industries and Culture, Nekeisha Burchell, has expressed deep sadness at the passing of acclaimed reggae artiste Fantan Mojah, describing him as a powerful cultural ambassador whose music carried messages of faith, consciousness and social justice.

In a release on Wednesday, commenting on his passing, Burchell said: “Fantan Mojah used his gift not only to entertain, but to uplift, educate and inspire. His music reflected the soul of our people and carried timeless messages of hope, spirituality and justice that resonated across generations and beyond our shores. Jamaica has lost a gifted son whose contribution to our cultural heritage will not be forgotten.”

Burchell noted that Jamaica’s creative practitioners play a vital role in shaping the country’s identity and strengthening its global influence, adding that the passing of artistes such as Fantan Mojah underscores the importance of preserving and celebrating the nation’s cultural legacy. “As we mourn his passing, let us also recommit ourselves to valuing and protecting the creatives whose work continues to tell Jamaica’s story, enrich our culture and inspire the world. Fantan Mojah’s voice may have fallen silent, but his legacy will continue to live on through his music.”

“Born Owen Moncrieffe, Fantan Mojah built a distinguished career as one of Jamaica’s conscious reggae voices. Through songs that championed righteousness, resilience and African identity, he earned the admiration of audiences across Jamaica and the international reggae community, leaving an enduring mark on the nation’s musical legacy,” the release stated.

The People’s National Party extended sincere condolences to Fantan Mojah’s family, friends, fellow musicians and supporters around the world during this time of grief.

“May his soul rest in peace,” the party said.
