Jamaica losing more people to violence than population growth
Dear Editor,
Jamaica’s 2.8 million net population replacement rate for 2025-2026 is estimated at 600, according to preliminary data.
In the same period, 673 people were killed by other civilians.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force fatally shot 311 people in 2025, representing a 65 per cent increase over the previous year. Combined, 984 people were killed in 2025.
As of July 2026, the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) reported 163 fatal shootings by police and other State agents year to date. By July 5, 2026, 275 people were killed by non-State actors, bringing the total killings for the year to 438.
Historical records indicate that since Independence in 1962, approximately 50,000 Jamaicans have been murdered by other citizens. When State-related fatal shootings are included, the total approaches 70,000.
The discussion around violence has extended to music. Following dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel’s denunciation of gun songs, there are reports of a proposed “Kartel Law” that would classify the performance of music promoting murder as a subversive activity.
Researchers have also noted a high prevalence of ACTN3 and R577X gene variants among Jamaicans, which are associated with fast-twitch muscle fibres common in power sports.
This will be of no use if we are killing each other faster than replacements.
The replacement rate seems inadequate for Jamaica present circumstances.
