‘All this for $2,000?’
Dispute over paltry sum ends up in court
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Judge Kaysha Grant-Pryce could not hide her surprise when told that a dispute over a measly sum was behind a case before her in the St James Parish Court.
“All of this for $2,000?” the judge asked Wednesday when provided with details of why Jordaine Campbell was before her on a charge of unlawful wounding.
The court heard that about 9:30 am on May 26 the complainant was at his car wash in Montego Bay, St James, when Campbell arrived to have his vehicle cleaned. After the service was completed, Campbell left the location. However, the allegations are that around 2:30 pm that same day Campbell returned and accused the complainant of stealing $2,000 from his vehicle.
The two men reportedly searched for the missing money but the cash was not found. The complainant insisted that he did not take the money.
According to the allegations, the situation later became hostile when Campbell slammed the complainant’s vacuum cleaner to the ground. The complainant reportedly responded by using a board to damage Campbell’s motor vehicle. The court heard that Campbell then used a knife to stab the complainant.
The incident was subsequently reported to the police, leading to Campbell’s arrest and charge.
On Wednesday the matter was referred to mediation, with a facilitator present in court. The parties reached an agreement and the judge adjourned the matter for further mention on September 2 when Campbell is expected to pay an agreed sum. Once payment is made the matter will be brought to an official close. Campbell’s bail was extended until the next court date.
