Style Observer Gardening (SOG) returns to Green Acres, St Catherine, to continue its tour through the garden of Reverend Florizel Allen.

The immediate regional vice-president of the Lay Magistrates’ Association of Jamaica has transformed his property into a botanical oasis — boasting an enviable collection of flora, fresh produce, and parakeets.

For Allen, the garden is far more than a retreat. It is a therapeutic sanctuary that aided his recovery from serious health challenges years ago. At the same time, cultivating this space is his way of honouring God’s original covenant with man.

“My garden has become a place for reflection, relaxation, and recreation. Interaction with plants was the first occupation man was required to engage with, according to Genesis chapter two. Man was placed to live in the garden and to take responsibility for its upkeep, and it’s of tremendous benefit to do so,” Allen said.

His garden is a true labour of love, sustained by careful soil management and a dedicated watering routine. It has not been without its difficulties. While his crotons and coleuses are highly susceptible to white flies, the roses and orchids present a different challenge altogether, demanding highly specialised watering, fertilising, and treatment regimens to truly thrive. Fortunately, Allen has been able to rely on fellow garden enthusiasts and local nurseries to help perfect his sanctuary.

“Overall, the care of my garden has included an almost daily engagement, sharing with fellow gardeners, such as members of the Green Acres Garden Club, and consultation with plant nurseries and other suppliers of seeds, seedlings, and all that are needed to take care of gardens,” Allen said.

For amateur enthusiasts looking to emulate Allen’s success, his keys to growth include possessing a genuine passion for the craft and a willingness to invest both time and capital.

“It is equally vital to purchase quality plants, and remember that both organic and chemical fertilisers and pesticides will be needed. Always be prepared to learn from those who possess the expertise and experience,” Allen advised.
