No doubt, all Jamaica stood up and took notice when news broke on Friday morning that seven individuals had died in a single motor vehicle crash.

As everyone digested the details, nothing could assuage the grief that washed the heart of the nation.

Fact is, the mission to reduce the carnage on our roads has taken on several modes; be it compliance, public education, amnesty, legislation upgrade, even work aimed at better surfaces and road markings.

The reason for this recent crash in Trelawny remains irrelevant in an atmosphere in which all of us must see it as a personal responsibility to make our roads safer, whether for our elderly, children, or ourselves.

The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) reports that nearly 175 individuals have been killed in some 150 fatal crashes since the start of the year.

It has to be admitted that fatalities have decreased by 20 per cent when compared to prior year, and the number of fatal crashes decreased by 17 per cent when compared with similar period in 2025, but grief knows no percentage, and the potential and ambition now stored in morgues care not of this tally decrease.

In the mix has to also be concern for pedestrians, motorcyclists, and all other road users.

Westmoreland and St Ann have recorded the highest number of fatalities with each accounting for 13 per cent, with Trelawny, St James, and Hanover collectively accounting for 35 per cent.

The numbers tell the story of an islandwide problem; though there are known hot spots.

The Jamaica Observer article in the Saturday edition carried the banner headline ‘Deadly deja vu’. Reporter Horace Hines captured the fact that a similar tragedy unfolded in the area just over a year ago.

“For those familiar with the July 6, 2025, single-vehicle crash in which five taxi operators were killed and seven other people injured, this latest crash — less than a mile away — feels like a grim case of déjà vu,” read the piece.

The seriousness of the circumstances requires an all-on-deck approach. Every motorist, commuter, cyclist, or child should undertake the personal mission to make our roads safer.

For his part, just this week Minister of Energy, Transport and Telecommunications Daryl Vaz said a zero-tolerance approach will be taken to traffic offences under the Road Traffic Act demerit points system.

Addressing Wednesday’s post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House, Minister Vaz urged motorists to prepare for the new system, which takes effect on October 1, 2026.

He noted that all key stakeholders, including his ministry, the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Court Administration Division, Ministry of National Security, Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), ITA;, and the Jamaica Information and Communications Technology Authority, will continue to work collaboratively towards delivering a comprehensive solution to the outstanding tickets ahead of October 1.

But we cannot wait until October 1. This most recent crash calls for the urgency of now.

Points deducted and the threat of licence suspension aside, as a nation, the commitment must be that we will follow the rules to protect property, reduce threats, and preserve life.

Through safer and more responsible use of the nation’s roads we will more actively save lives and secure our future.
