Reggae heavyweight Buju Banton has made an emphatic return to his dancehall roots with the release of his 13th studio album, Too Too Bad, which debuted at No. 3 on the United States iTunes Reggae Albums chart.

The Butterflies singer was denied the top spot by producer Kemar “Flava” McGregor, whose projects Riddim 91 and the compilation Kiss of Judas occupied the chart’s first and second positions, respectively.

Despite missing out on No. 1, Too Too Bad has generated significant momentum internationally since its July 17 release through VP Records.

The 13-track collection—whose title pays homage to Buju’s acclaimed 2006 album Too Bad—signals a deliberate return to the gritty dancehall sound that first established the Gargamel as one of Jamaica’s most formidable voices. The project boasts production from Supa Dups, DJ Khaled and Di Genius, while guest appearances from Ari Lennox and Gramps Morgan add further star power.

The album has also made an immediate impact on reggae iTunes charts worldwide, peaking at No. 8 in Belgium, No. 22 in Canada, No. 26 in the United Kingdom, No. 27 in France, No. 28 in Japan, and No. 34 in Germany.

Several songs from the album have also gained traction individually.

The lead single, Butterflies, climbed to No. 11 on the US iTunes Reggae Songs chart over the weekend after previously reaching No. 1 when it was first released. Produced by Supa Dups, the song is built around the legendary Real Rock rhythm, one of reggae’s most enduring instrumental tracks, and also performed strongly on the overall digital sales rankings tracked by PopVortex.

Another standout, Xrated, saw Buju unleash his trademark gravelly delivery over the fast-rising WYFL rhythm, climbing as high as No. 12. Meanwhile, Wild Woman, featuring DJ Khaled, broke into the Top 20, while We Nuh Play reached No. 22.

The release follows Buju’s 2023 album Born For Greatness, which featured collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Stephen Marley and Victoria Monét, and further cemented his successful resurgence following his return to recording.

Over a career spanning more than three decades, Buju Banton has assembled one of reggae’s most celebrated catalogues.

His breakthrough album, Voice of Jamaica (1993), balanced militant social commentary with uncompromising dancehall, while Til Shiloh (1995) is widely regarded as his masterpiece, chronicling his spiritual transformation through classics such as Untold Stories, Champion and Wanna Be Loved.

He continued that evolution with Inna Heights (1997), a deeply Rastafarian project that produced enduring songs including Destiny and Our Father in Zion.

In 2010, Buju earned the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album with Before the Dawn, further cementing his place among reggae’s greatest recording artistes.

With Too Too Bad, Buju Banton once again demonstrates his ability to bridge generations, blending authentic dancehall energy with contemporary production while reminding fans why he remains one of the genre’s most influential and enduring figures.
