KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) is reporting that Jamaica’s maternal mortality ratio was 150.3 per 100,000 live births in 2024, based on preliminary records.

There were also 39 maternal deaths recorded in Jamaica in 202, according to the PIOJ in the 2025 edition of its annual publication, the Economic and Social Survey Jamaica.

The survey said Hurricane Melissa disrupted the Baby-Friendly Hospital Programme at several hospitals and affected the delivery of maternal and child health services.

“In response, restoration efforts focused on re-establishing essential services and addressing urgent nutrition needs for pregnant and lactating women,” said the PIOJ.

It said a national maternal health outreach programme was implemented to improve health education, awareness, and access to key services.

Maternal care services included routine health checks, psychosocial counselling, ultrasound sonography, and physical activity assessments, while care packages containing essential supplies were distributed to pregnant and lactating mothers.

Additionally, focus group discussions and a quantitative survey were also conducted on site among pregnant women to assess their circumstances and identify priority post-hurricane needs.
