Bigger, better Emancipation Jubilee Vigil planned
The annual Emancipation Jubilee Vigil, scheduled to be held from Friday, July 31, 2026, into Saturday, August 1, 2026 (Awgus Maanin), at Seville Heritage Park in St Ann, promises to be a powerful celebration of freedom, African heritage, and national resilience.
The 2026 staging carries special significance following the passage of Hurricane Melissa in late 2025, and is in part a tribute to Jamaicans’ strength and determination, embodying the tallawah spirit of the ancestors and demonstrating remarkable progress on the road to recovery.
According to Orville Hill, chairman of Jamaica National Heritage Trust, hosts of the event, this year’s Emancipation Jubilee is expected to surpass the success of last year’s staging, which welcomed approximately 8,000 patrons.
“This year’s celebration promises an even richer and more immersive experience. Our patrons can look forward to a stellar line-up of top local cultural artistes and bands, delivering powerful performances rooted in African retention, resistance, and cultural pride such as the Charles Town Maroons, Hertford Cultural Group, Manchioneal Culture Group, Petra Kay, Sista Pat, Warrior King, Marcia Griffiths, and many more,” he shared.
One of the highlights will be the re-enactment of the reading of the Emancipation Proclamation at 12 midnight followed by a floral tribute to the African ancestors.
The vigil will also feature a vibrant Artisan Village which will showcase authentic Jamaican art, craft, fashion, and heritage products.
An extensive selection of traditional Jamaican cuisine will be available throughout the celebration in the food court and an exhibitors’ village, where cultural artefacts, publications and information about Jamaica’s heritage and culture are on display.
Free chocolate tea will be served throughout the night in enamel mugs, offering warmth, nourishment, and a symbolic connection to ancestral practices.
Patrons are encouraged to take their enamel mugs with them or purchase theirs from the Jamaica National Heritage Trust booths.
The event is free of charge to the public; however, patrons are required to have a ticket for entry.
Tickets are available from JNHT offices, 79 Duke Street, Kingston, and Seville Heritage Park, St Ann.
Vigil gates open at 6:00 pm and showtime is at 8:00 pm.
