Mother’s Day gift turns into CA$70 million lottery winnings for retired Jamaican couple
ONTARIO, Canada — Newly retired Jamaican-born couple Audrey and Wills W are looking forward to a very different retirement after winning a life-changing tax-free C$70 million Lotto Max jackpot in Canada.
According to CBC News, the Brampton, Ontario residents claimed the massive prize after Wills surprised his wife with a Lotto Max Quick Pick ticket as a Mother’s Day gift. The winning ticket, purchased at the Canco One Stop Gas Station on Steeles Avenue in Brampton, matched the May 8 Lotto Max draw.
“It was Friday before Mother’s Day, so I bought two tickets — I buy one for her and one for my daughter; I never knew that it was going to happen like this,” Wills explained.
His wife initially thought the prize displayed on the lottery app was just CA$70.
“When I checked it, I said, ‘Wills, look, it’s CA$70’. And he said, let me see. And I scan it again. But…he said, ‘It’s not CA$70, it’s CA$70 million’. I said, ‘What!?’ So that’s the time I really get excited and jump off the bed. I always dream of winning, but not that amount,” she shared.
Audrey’s dream is returning to Jamaica to build the dream home she has wanted for years.
“My plan, right away, is to build my dream home in Jamaica because I’ve been working towards it… and I cannot build it. So it’s come true for me now,” she said.
Wills, who always dreamed of winning, said his plans are not as grand as building a dream home.
“Maybe she have bigger plans than me. I don’t get too fussy-fussy, you know what I mean? I would like to rebuild a vintage car, and cruise, you know? I love the sea. So as long as I have my wife, a nice home, and the sun is shining, everything is good,” he said.
