The sixth Diamond Mile, its first running since 2019, brings together the biggest names in local racing for a landmark renewal. The Graded Stakes for three-year-olds and upward carries a purse of $10 million and will be contested over one mile (1,600m) at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

The field includes three current track record holders — Rideallday, Legacy Isle, and Phenomenal Power — along with the highly-rated Nautical Star.

The return of the Diamond Mile, coupled with increased purses across the card, marks another major milestone for the Jamaican racing calendar.

The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide assesses the 13 runners:

1. GIRVANO (USA): (4 b c Girvin – Summer In Midway) – Occasional flashes but clearly outclassed here. Girvano is likely to struggle.

2. ROYAL POPPY: (USA) (6 ch m Classic Empire – M’Dearest) – Debuted locally July 4, finishing 11 lengths behind Track Record winner Phenomenal Power at 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m). Royal Poppy will find this too tough to handle and is best left alone.

3. OF A REVOLUTION: (USA) (7 ch h MacLean’s Music – Hot Spell) – First try at a mile in six local starts. Of A Revolution is expected to show early speed then falter when the big guns get going.

Equipment: visor off.

4. BARNABY: (USA) (5 b h Tapiture – Giants Diva) – Was second to stablemate Nautical Star over this trip on June 27. Barnaby prefers farther, but his stamina should see him finishing late. A place chance for exotics.

5. FUNCAANDUN (USA): (5 b h Klimt – Fiftyshadesoffun) – Honest campaigner. Unlikely to win, but a top-four finish is within reach.

6. BLUE VINYL: (7 ch h Bern Identity – Blufield) – One of two local-breds in the line-up. Blue Vinyl lacks the class for this level and is not expected to be a major player.

7. PHENOMENAL POWER (USA): (3 dk b c Violence – Dancing Dixie) – Set a new 7½-furlong Track Record of 1:29.0 on July 4. Phenomenal Power flopped next time over six furlongs (1,200m), finishing fifth behind
Desert of Malibu, but that looked like a prep. The mile suits and he has the speed to win.

8. SIR DON (USA): (3 b c Spun To Run – Enamored) – The Viceroy Trophy winner over 5½ furlongs (1,100m). Big step up in class and distance, but Sir Don is talented.

9. LEGACY ISLE (USA): (6 b h Shackleford – Queenameina) – Lowered the 7-furlong (1,400m0) track record on June 6. Training well and drops 8lb to 118. A miler on breeding, but his class can carry him to the winners’ enclosure

10. PACK PLAYS (USA): (5 dk b/br h Stay Thirsty – Standard Deal) – A sprinter who will struggle to stay this trip.

11. NEO STAR: (7 b h Neolithic – Angel Dreams) – The other local-bred, faces an impossible task.

12. NAUTICAL STAR (USA): (6 dk b/br h Dixie Chatter – Kiss Me Chocolate) – Impressive 1:35.3 win over this mile on June 27. Nautical Star likes to track and pounce and is expected to be a major player.

13. RIDEALLDAY (USA): (4 gr/rn c Vekoma – Song of Hours) – Reigning Horse of the Year. Rideallday broke the 8½-furlong (1,700m) track record in the Ian Levy Cup. He is well-rested, well-drawn on the outside, and proven at the distance. Concedes weight but remains the one to beat.
