EDUCATION has always represented more than academic achievement for Felicia Johnson. It has been a pathway to stability, purpose, and the opportunity to create a future different from the circumstances she experienced as a child.

Today, the University of Technology, Jamaica (UTech) nursing student is pursuing her dream of becoming a health-care professional while carrying with her a remarkable story of resilience, perseverance, and determination. As a recipient of the JWN Foundation scholarship, Johnson’s journey serves as inspiration to young people across Jamaica who may be facing challenges but refuse to allow their circumstances to define their future.

Raised in Water Lane, Clarendon, Johnson’s childhood was shaped by experiences that tested her resilience from an early age.

“I grew up in Water Lane. After experiencing a childhood marked by frequent moves and instability, living in Water Lane gave me a sense of stability and belonging,” Johnson said.

That sense of stability proved transformative. “It allowed me to dream bigger, focus on my education, and develop the resilience and determination that continue to guide me today,” she said.

Growing up in her community exposed her to both the challenges and strengths that exist within many Jamaican communities. “I saw first-hand the effects of financial hardship, limited resources, and social struggles. But conversely, I also experienced the strength of community support through guidance and love,” she said.

Rather than becoming discouraged by those realities, Johnson found inspiration in them. “These experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others and advocate for vulnerable individuals. They taught me to remain hopeful, work hard, and use my experiences to make a positive difference in the lives of others,” she said.

Throughout her journey Johnson has developed a set of personal values — rooted in community and family — that continue to guide her decisions and aspirations. “My family and community helped shape the eight core values that guide my life: authenticity, boldness, confidence, excellence, elegance, holiness, resilience, and stability,” she said.

Much of that character was forged through adversity. After her mother migrated when she was very young, Johnson spent much of her childhood moving between different homes and communities throughout Jamaica. “These challenges taught me resilience, perseverance, and the importance of creating stability despite difficult circumstances,” she said.

Her school and church communities also played critical roles in her development, providing opportunities for leadership, service, and spiritual growth. “Through leadership opportunities, youth Sundays, and community service, I learned boldness, integrity, and the importance of serving others with grace and compassion,” Johnson said.

Those values became the foundation upon which she built an exceptional academic record. Johnson’s educational journey is distinguished by an extraordinary accomplishment of passing 24 subjects.

“My academic journey has been one of persistence, discipline, and growth. Passing 24 subjects reflects years of hard work, consistency, and a determination to succeed despite obstacles,” Johnson said.

Her motivation stemmed from a desire to create a different future for herself and her family. “I looked at the patterns and lifestyle of members in my immediate family and realised that I did not always have a role model whose path I wanted to follow. I was motivated by my desire to create a better future for myself and my family,” she said.

Education, she believed, was the key, and her love for learning flourished during her years at Denbigh High School, particularly through her exposure to the sciences.

“One educator who had a significant impact on me was Mrs Rose-Campbell, my food, nutrition and health teacher. She created engaging and interactive learning environments that encouraged curiosity, creativity, and critical thinking,” Johnson said. Subjects such as biology, chemistry, food and nutrition, and health quickly became favourites.

“They helped me understand how the human body functions and how health influences people’s overall well-being. Those subjects sparked a deeper appreciation for the connection between science and everyday life,” she said. That passion eventually led her to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at UTech.

“I chose nursing because it is diverse, financially feasible, and represents the perfect amalgam of the natural and social sciences, service, and advocacy. Nursing allows me to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives while addressing both physical and emotional needs,” Johnson shared.

Her commitment to academic excellence, leadership, and service eventually led her to apply for the JWN Foundation scholarship after learning about the opportunity through her church’s youth director.

Johnson said the scholarship represents much more than financial assistance as it will help offset tuition and educational expenses while allowing her to continue participating in volunteer activities, leadership programmes, and professional development opportunities.

One of the people who has witnessed her remarkable growth first-hand is her husband, Geraldio, who has been one of her strongest supporters throughout her academic journey.

“Through my eyes, she is the most special and precious individual on this earth. She is the epitome of a woman reaching her full potential because of her ability to combine intelligence, passion, ambition, commitment, loyalty, and determination in everything she attempts,” he said.

He describes her as a natural leader and nation-builder, “whether through contributing to the upbringing of her siblings, serving and growing within our church, or now leading at the university level”.

Receiving the JWN Foundation scholarship “has significantly eased the financial burden associated with pursuing higher education and has provided us with greater peace of mind as she continues her studies”, he said.

Looking ahead, Johnson envisions a future dedicated to service, health-care leadership, and community impact.

In five to 10 years she hopes to be a nurse, continuing her professional development while mentoring young people who aspire to pursue higher education and careers in health care. Ultimately, she hopes her work will leave a lasting legacy.

“I hope to leave a legacy of service, compassion, leadership, and advocacy. I want people to remember me as someone who used her education and experiences to uplift others and create positive change in my community and country,” she said.
