NIS orphan’s benefit finally on the way
Dear Claudienne,
My family is experiencing an issue with the NIS office in Trelawny. My brother died suddenly in 2023, leaving a son who had already lost his mother and is now an orphan. My mother, who is incapacitated, is the child’s guardian.
During Hurricane Melissa their home was destroyed, placing further strain on the family’s already limited resources. My brother was an NIS contributor, and my mother applied for the orphan’s benefit on behalf of his son. However, she has received no positive response.
Whenever we seek information we are given the runaround and told that the case officer is reviewing the file and will call us back. We have provided my brother’s NIS number to the office and would appreciate your assistance in resolving this matter.

Tell Claudienne contacted the Office of the Minister of Labour and Social Security, the permanent secretary in the ministry, and the director of the NIS regarding your concerns.
Your mother has since informed the column that the NIS claims manager telephoned her on June 10, 2026 and advised that she would receive a benefit payment at the end of July.
