Spanish Town Hospital Urology Department celebrates five years of advancing specialist care

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — Spanish Town Hospital recently celebrated five years of excellence in urological care, marking a significant milestone since the establishment of its urology service in May 2021.

As part of the fifth anniversary celebrations, the department received new prostate biopsy equipment, including an advanced ultrasound machine. This investment will improve early detection and diagnosis of prostate cancer, allowing patients to access timely treatment and care.

Senior Medical Officer of Spanish Town Hospital, Dr Jacqueline Wright James, said the milestone reflects the commitment and dedication of the hospital’s clinical team.

“Over the past five years, our Urology Department has demonstrated what is possible through vision, innovation and teamwork under the leadership of Dr Elon Thompson, consultant urologist. The growth of this service has improved the lives of thousands of patients while expanding access to advanced urological care within the public health system,” she said in a statement from the South East Regional Health Authority.

Dr Thompson said the department’s progress represents the dedication of its multidisciplinary team.

“We set out to build a service that would provide comprehensive, modern urological care closer to home for our patients. Today, we celebrate the lives we have touched and remain committed to expanding our services, embracing new technologies and delivering the highest standard of care,” he said.

Over the past five years, the department has expanded access to specialised treatment, improved patient outcomes and introduced advanced surgical procedures, strengthening healthcare delivery for residents of St Catherine and surrounding communities.

The Urology Department has performed nearly 1,500 surgical procedures and provided specialist outpatient care to thousands of patients, reducing the need for many Jamaicans to seek treatment outside the parish. The department has grown into a centre of excellence, offering complex interventions previously unavailable at the institution.

Key achievements include the successful completion of the hospital’s first radical cystectomy in January 2022, the first laparoscopic nephrectomy in September 2023 and more than 60 radical prostatectomies for patients diagnosed with prostate cancer.

In July 2025, the department further enhanced its services with the introduction of laser technology for minimally invasive kidney stone surgery, improving patient recovery and clinical outcomes.
