FROM August 1st to 5th, Jamaica will welcome the visit of the ARA Libertad frigate, one of the world’s great sailing training ships and the principal training vessel of the Argentine Navy. The arrival of this emblematic ship represents a new opportunity to reaffirm the bonds of friendship between Argentina and Jamaica and to celebrate the deep maritime tradition shared by both countries.

Built at the Río Santiago Shipyard and commissioned in 1963, the Libertad is one of the most recognised symbols of the Argentine Navy. Over more than six decades, she has sailed the oceans, visited hundreds of ports across all five continents, and trained thousands of naval officers. For Argentine midshipmen, the training voyage is an essential stage of their professional development, combining the demands of sailing with exposure to other cultures and interaction with navies from around the world.

On this occasion, the frigate is undertaking her 54th training voyage, which includes calls at various ports throughout the Americas. Jamaica will be one of the stops on this journey, which continues a tradition of training, exchange, and connection among peoples that began more than six decades ago.

The frigate will dock at the historic naval dockyard in Port Royal, one of the Caribbean’s most emblematic historic and maritime sites. Her visit will coincide with a week of special significance for Jamaica, on the eve of its Independence celebrations, adding further symbolism to this port call and providing an ideal opportunity to celebrate the friendship between both nations. During her stay, she will carry out activities with the Jamaica Defence Force, the Caribbean Maritime University and other national institutions.

In addition, the ARA Libertad will be open to the public on August 3 and 4, offering residents and visitors the opportunity to tour her decks, learn about life on board, and discover the history and traditions of one of the world’s great sailing training ships.
