KINGSTON, Jamaica  — Two suspects, one a female, were detained after police shot up a motor vehicle reportedly transporting weapons at the Portmore Toll Road exit in St Andrew on Tuesday night.

The police reportedly had to open fire at the vehicle after the driver attempted to run them over. An AK-47 assault rifle with a magazine containing five 7.62 rounds was seized during the incident.

It is understood that the female, who is from Naggo Head in Portmore, St Catherine, was hospitalised after the incident. The male suspect, from Dunbeholden in Spanish Town, was treated at hospital and released into police custody.

Reports reaching Observer Online indicated that around 11:30 pm, the police, acting on information that occupants aboard a Nissan minibus were transporting guns, accosted the vehicle along the toll road in a service unit.

Upon exiting the toll road behind the suspects’ vehicle, the police, in a bid to stop them, went ahead of the minibus.

The suspects, the police reported, collided in the rear of the service unit and both vehicles came to a stop. The police exited and identified themselves. However, the minibus drove off in their direction.

The cops, in fear of their lives, took evasive action and opened fire in the direction of the bus, which caused the vehicle to come to a complete stop.

When the gunfire subsided, an extensive search of the vehicle was conducted, and a male and female were found with injuries. The firearm and ammunition were found under the rear passenger seat.

The suspects were taken to hospital, where the female was admitted and the man treated and taken into custody.

The police said the front and rear windshields, all doors, and the front and sides of the Nissan minivan were damaged. No member of the police team was injured.
