KINGSTON, Jamaica — Samantha Hall’s gold medal in the women’s discus throw led a four-medal haul for Jamaica on Thursday at the 23rd Commonwealth Games at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow, Scotland.

Hall threw 61.66m to take Jamaica’s first-ever medal in the event at the Commonwealth Games; triple jumper Ackelia Smith and 100m hurdler Megan Simmonds were silver medal winners, while Shantae Foreman took the bronze in the triple jump.

Jamaica ended the day on eight medals and third overall in the track and field medal table- four gold, two silver and two bronze.

Hall, who entered the contest as the top rated athlete, had to rally to beat 20-year-old Canadian Julia Tunks, who took silver with 60.67m, with Seema of India third with 58.65m.

World leader Thea Lafond of Dominica won the gold medal in the women’s triple jump with 14.60m (0.7m/s) to complete a full set of medals at the Commonwealth Games after taking bronze in 2018 and silver in 2022.

It was the first time since 2006 that a Jamaican had not won the event. Smith was second with 14.04m (1.0m/s) after finishing sixth in 2022 and Foreman third with 13.96m (1.3m/s).

World Indoor champion and Bahamian national record holder Devynne Charlton scored a big upset in the 100m hurdles final, winning with a wind-aided 12.33 seconds (2.5m/s), holding off Simmonds who ran 12.41 seconds with Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan, winner of the last two titles, having to be satisfied with the bronze medal with 12.60 seconds.
