2026 Isuzu D-MAX: Built to last
Isuzu has long been one of the darlings of the commercial vehicle sector, having built a reputation for durability, reliability, and longevity over its long history.
The D-MAX pickup is endowed with these characteristics, and for 2026 continues to be so.
EXTERIOR
The four-door cab pickup is based mostly on function rather than form. Redesigned from the ground up, Isuzu calls it their ‘Spirit of Truck’ DNA, giving the D-MAX a masculine and no-nonsense look from its wide stance and wedge-shaped body lines. However, function over form still rules, and the D-MAX uses aerodynamic integration of the lower body to boost fuel efficiency and reduce wind noise. For those wanting style, up to 18-inch wheels can be had.
INTERIOR
Inside the new spacious cabin it reflects the working nature of the D-MAX. There’s a quality impression and the presence of durability to the cabin. There’s a mixture of hard-wearing plastics, with soft-touch materials at the main points of user contact. Ergonomics is a key word, with simple large buttons for the main functions to be accessed with ease under all conditions, and feel like they’ll be working for years to come.
Storage is plentiful for those who have to work. The deep centre console will swallow important gear, as will the dual gloveboxes. Cup holders and door pockets that all can hold a 1.5-litre bottle further contribute to the ability to hold personal cargo. The D-MAX has redesigned seats with improved internal materials for higher comfort, and better lateral support to increase occupant, especially driver, comfort.
The infotainment is similarly focused, using USB-C for smartphone-run connectivity and services.
ON THE ROAD

Powered by a 3-litre turbodiesel, the D-MAX is not lacking in this area. With 190bhp and 332lb/ft of torque, it manages to be both frugal and powerful. This is because there is tons of low-end torque to effortlessly pull the D-MAX along in the situations it’s built to operate in.
Boost response is good, and it rarely has to be taken into the higher rpms for more power. On road, this keeps engine noise and vibration low so as not to upset passengers in the cabin, meaning a strong case for prolonged on-road use.
But the D-MAX didn’t get its reputation for its on-road manners. Off-road, it has the ability to match the class leaders, because it’s all under the skin with a chassis boasting greater torsional and longitudinal rigidity. The same suspension that smooths out rough roads and can deal with highway travel can easily handle tough terrain with or without payload.

Rookie or professional, the D-MAX gives confidence in challenging situations, delivering up to 800 millimetres of wading depth, 30 degrees of approach angle, 22.9 degrees of breakover, and 24.2 degrees of departure angle. Being equipped with 2WD, 4WD, and 4WD Low, plus a rear differential, few things can slow, even stop, the D-MAX on a trail.
VERDICT
The D-MAX retains the ethos of the Isuzu brand. There’s a reason the company is a commercial equipment manufacturing powerhouse, and that all is installed into their flagship pickup. The durability, reliability, and ability shown through the history of the D-MAX pickup continue without question. 2026 adds some key updates and refinements to keep it a top contender.
