Free charging at JPS stations for Independence and Emancipation holidays
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) is offering free electric vehicle charging at all JPS Charge ‘n Go stations islandwide on Emancipation Day, August 1, and Independence Day, August 6.
On both holidays, charging will be free from 12:00 am to 11:59 pm, giving electric vehicle (EV) owners 24 hours to power up at no cost, as they travel to celebrations, family gatherings and getaways across the island.
In a statement, JPS said the free-charging holiday offer is the latest expression of its ongoing support for electric vehicle (EV) adoption.
Through its ongoing partnership with ATL Automotive, Stewarts Automotive Group and Flash Motors, JPS has since 2025 offered new EV owners a range of attractive incentives, such as discounts on their electricity bills, in addition to the big win of reducing the cost of fuelling transportation by 30 to 50 per cent. While the initial upfront cost of electric vehicles may be higher than traditional vehicles, the savings on fuel and maintenance ultimately makes the switch more practical and appealing for everyday Jamaicans, making it a win-win experience.
“Partnership remains central to that progress. By working with local dealerships and continuing to expand our public charging network, we are helping to remove barriers to EV adoption and make the shift more manageable for customers,” Nugent added.
Since JPS introduced its electricity discount bill incentives for new EV owners, participating auto dealers have collectively sold over 200 EVs, a signal of growing national confidence in electric mobility and in JPS’ role in driving it forward. Dealers islandwide have credited the incentives not only with boosting sales, but with shifting public perception and encouraging more Jamaicans to make the switch.
