Returning to our roots: Jamaica’s healing herbs and natural remedies
WHEN I was growing up, if I wasn’t feeling well, my mother would always make me a cup of tea. Whether it was ginger, cerasee, or peppermint tea, even another herbal remedy, the healing often began in our kitchens and gardens rather than in a medicine cabinet.
Today, many of us have moved away from these traditions. We have become accustomed to reaching for over-the-counter medications at the first sign of illness. While modern medicine certainly has its place, we should not forget the incredible healing resources that have been available to us for generations.
One of Jamaica’s greatest treasures is its abundance of natural herbs and plants. Our island is blessed with a rich variety of healing resources that have supported the health and well-being of the ancestors for centuries. Long before pharmacies were common, Jamaicans relied on nature to help strengthen the body, soothe ailments, and promote overall wellness.
As new viruses, illness, and health concerns continue to emerge, building and maintaining a strong immune system has never been more important. Incorporating natural herbs into our daily routines can be a simple and effective way to support our health.
Ginger, for example, is widely known for its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to aid digestion. A warm cup of ginger tea in the morning can help awaken the body and support overall wellness. Peppermint tea may help soothe the stomach and promote relaxation. Cerasee, although bitter, has long been valued in Jamaican households as a cleansing herb that many believe helps purify the body.

Beyond the physical benefits, these traditional practices also connect us to our culture, heritage, and community. They remind us of a time when wellness was not viewed as a quick fix but as a way of life. Returning to these natural practices does not mean rejecting modern medicine. Instead, it means embracing a balanced approach to health, one that honours both scientific advances and the wisdom passed down through generations. We can nourish our bodies, celebrate our heritage, and take meaningful steps toward a healthier future.
