ST JAMES, Jamaica — An early morning fire destroyed the Jobs Bedding mattress factory in Montego Bay, St James, on Monday, leaving the facility in ruins.

Firefighters, however, were able to save the warehouse section of the establishment, preventing the blaze from spreading further.

According to the Jamaica Fire Brigade, emergency personnel were alerted to the incident before 2:00 am and dispatched four units from the Montego Bay Fire Station.

When firefighters arrived, they found the factory engulfed in flames. Their efforts successfully contained the fire to the manufacturing section, although everything inside the factory was destroyed.

A unit from the Falmouth Fire Station later joined the operation to assist in extinguishing the blaze.

Reports also indicate that one of the Montego Bay Fire Station units was damaged in a crash while returning from replenishing its water supply at a hydrant. The condition of the occupants and the extent of the damage to the vehicle remain unclear.

The fire occurred near a service station, but there have been no reports of any damage or disruption to that business.

Fire investigators remain at the scene as they work to determine the cause of the blaze.
