ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A one-year-old girl has been hospitalised with a gunshot wound to her leg following a shooting incident involving her three-year-old brother who allegedly got hold of their father’s service pistol in Siloah, St Elizabeth on Sunday.

A police source confirmed that the incident happened about 4:30 pm when the police constable and his family were returning home from a trip to a waterfall attraction in northern St Elizabeth.

It is reported that the 31-year-old policeman stopped on a roadway and left his children, their mother and a 16-year-old inside the vehicle.

Police said the cop, who is assigned to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, reportedly left his service pistol unattended inside the vehicle with the occupants.

It is reported that the three-year-old got hold of the firearm and the weapon was discharged injuring the one-year-old child.

The child was rushed to hospital where she has been admitted in a stable condition.

The police’s Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) are probing the incident.
