SILOAH, St Elizabeth — The leadership of the police’s Area Three was tight-lipped yesterday amid an investigation into the circumstances leading to a one-year-old girl being shot in the leg allegedly by her three-year-old brother with their father’s service pistol while on a family trip in northern St Elizabeth over the weekend.

When contacted on Monday regarding the incident, acting head of the police’s Area Three Senior Superintendent Shane McCalla declined to comment, citing that the matter remains under investigation.

Area Three comprises Manchester, Clarendon, and St Elizabeth.

The police’s Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau and the Independent Commission of Investigations are probing the incident which reportedly happened about 4:30 pm in Siloah, northern St Elizabeth, on Sunday.

A highly placed source said the children’s father, who is a constable assigned to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, was with his family, while they were returning home from a trip to a waterfall attraction in northern St Elizabeth.

It is reported that the 31-year-old policeman stopped on a roadway and left his children, their mother, and a 16-year-old inside the vehicle.

At that time the policeman reportedly left his service pistol unattended inside the vehicle with the occupants.

The three-year-old reportedly got hold of the firearm and the weapon was discharged, injuring the one-year-old child. The wounded child was rushed to the Black River Hospital where she has been admitted in stable condition with a flesh wound.
