The 2026 Classic season comes to a close at Caymanas Park on Thursday, August 6 with the running of the $7.5-million Jamaica Derby over 12 furlongs (2,400m).

A full field of 16 three-year-olds will contest the Blue Riband event, headlined by We Jammin, the St Leger winner, Salute The Don, the 2000 Guineas winner, and Dream, the 1000 Guineas and Jamaica Oaks winner who bids to make history against the boys.

The Jamaica Observer’s The Supreme Racing Guide takes a closer look at each runner and their chances of winning.

London Spirit.

1. SENOR BISCOTTI: (3 b c by Savoy Stomp – Baby P) – Was a creditable fourth in the 10-furlong Jamaica St Leger on July 5. Lacks the brilliance to win but should be in the mix for a minor share again.

2. MAVERICK: (3 b c by Aveenu Malcainu – Midnight In Paris) – Steps up in class and looks out of his depth against this field.

3. JO BOXER: (3 b c by Casual Trick – BillieJo) – Simply does not have the quality required for a Classic of this nature.

4.  WAH A GWAAN: (3 b c by Aveenu Malcainu – She’s Irie) – Won over 9½ furlongs (1,900m) in 2:04.1 on July 18. That was a big step up, but he needs to improve several lengths to be a factor here.

5. LONDON SPIRIT: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Blufield) – Finished a closing 4¾-length third in the St Leger behind We Jammin and Salute The Don. The extra two furlongs (400m) should suit and he is the obvious one to be running on late.

6.I LOVE BIRDIE: (3 b c by Savoy Stomp – Birdie My Love) – Offered nothing in the St Leger on July 5. Hard to see any change in form here from I Love Birdie.

7. BIGGER BOSS: (3 b c by Bern Identity – Woman Is Boss) – No form to suggest he can win or even hit the frame at this level.

8. DREAM CATCHER: (3 b f by Bern Identity – Double Jeopardy) – The Oaks winner looked dominant on August 1. However, she was well beaten in fifth behind these in the St Leger. Taking on the colts again over 12 furlongs makes this a much tougher assignment.

9. MOHANLAL: (3 b c by Casual Trick – Raise Your Voice) – Was well beaten in the St Leger but bounced back to win a mile race impressively in 1:37.4 on July 18. That puts him back in the picture for a placing.

10. WE JAMMIN: (3 ch c by Bern Identity – Jammin) – Missed the 2000 Guineas through injury but returned to crush the St Leger field by 4½ lengths. The Derby trip holds no fears and he enters as the clear horse to beat.

11. DARWIN: (3 b c Casual Trick – Cape) – Comes in off a win but faces a massive jump in class. Likely to struggle.

12. STARDOM: (3 b c Sensational Slam – Trinket Box) – Failed to fire with a sixth in the St Leger. Stardom should enjoy this galloping nature of 12 furlongs and can run a much improved race.

13. EYE OF THE TIGER: (3 b c by Aveenu Malcainu – Full Moon’s Enough) – The Derby distance looks beyond him on pedigree and form.

14. STRONG AVEENU: (3 b c Aveenu Malcainu – Ruby Rose) – Beaten out of sight last time and unlikely to be any closer here.

15. PROSPERITY SEN: (3 b c Aveenu Malcainu – Sencity) – Has shown nothing to indicate he can be competitive in this.

16. SALUTE THE DON: (3 ch c Aveenu Malcainu – Abcidabby) – The 2000 Guineas winner was soundly beaten by We Jammin and the trip in the St Leger. He’ll run his race, but the extra two furlongs against We Jammin again looks too much.
