Videographer involved in ‘distasteful’ Elephant Man incident considering legal action, demands apology

KINGSTON, Jamaica — The videographer who was dragged while on stage by recording artiste Elephant Man in a now viral incident is considering legal action after suffering “considerable embarrassment” and damage to his equipment, his attorneys have indicated.

A letter issued on Tuesday by law firm Knight, Junor & Samuels, on behalf of Dario Shields, described the incident which occurred at Dream Weekend’s YUSH event as wholly unacceptable.

It claimed that Shields, who Dream Entertainment Limited contracted to provide videography services, was intentionally dragged by the artiste, whose given name is O’Neil Bryan, in full view of thousands of patrons, members of the media and fellow industry professionals.

It added that Elephant Man also uttered derogatory and degrading remarks.

The now viral video shows the artiste dragging the videographer while telling him to “move, move”, uttering expletives and adding, “Yuh broke, yuh can’t sue me.”

“Our client regards both the physical conduct and the accompanying remarks as wholly unacceptable,” the letter stated.

It further claimed that the incident caused Shields considerable embarrassment and emotional distress “while he was simply carrying out his professional responsibilities for which he had been engaged”.

It noted that, at the time of the incident, Shields was operating professional camera equipment comprising a Sony A7 III camera fitted with a Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 lens which sustained damage. The nature and extent of that damage are presently being assessed.

Shields described Elephant Man’s actions as distasteful, entirely uncalled for and woefully unprofessional.

The artiste had shared a video online after the incident indicating he had apologised to Shields and said he was wrong to speak to the man the way he had.

“No individual, regardless of their perceived status or public profile, is above the law,” the letter noted, adding, “As at the date of this press release, no formal apology has been received by our client despite public claims by Mr Bryan that an apology had been offered.”

The letter called upon Elephant Man to issue a full, public and unequivocal apology for his conduct and the derogatory remarks made.

“Such an apology would acknowledge the indignity suffered by our client and reaffirm the respect that ought to be afforded to professionals working within Jamaica’s entertainment industry,” it said.

The letter noted that notwithstanding the issuance of an apology, Shields instructed the lawyers to consider and pursue all legal remedies available.
