ST JAMES, Jamaica — A giant swing attraction erected between Mango Walk and Norwood has been demolished following enforcement action by the St James Municipal Corporation.

The demolition was carried out on Wednesday after the corporation said operators ignored notices to cease construction. According to the corporation, the structure was built without the necessary building and planning approvals.

“The St James Municipal Corporation today took enforcement action against the operators of a giant swing tourist attraction operating in the community of Norwood Pen,” the corporation said in a statement.

“Earlier in the day, a cease notice was served after it was discovered that the structure had been erected without the required building or planning approvals. When the enforcement team returned later in the afternoon, they found that the notices had been removed and the premises locked. In response, the acting superintendent of roads and works mobilised the enforcement team to commence demolition of the unauthorised structure,” it continued.

The corporation reminded members of the public that all developments must comply with the provisions of the Building Act and the Town and Country Planning Act.

“While we regret having to take such measures, they are necessary to protect the safety of both residents and visitors. The removal of official notices and the absence of approvals represent a clear disregard for local authority,” it said.

Officials said obtaining the proper approvals would have ensured the structure met safety standards and addressed requirements such as parking facilities, bathrooms, safety measures, attraction licensing, and insurance.

“The corporation’s decision may be unpopular, but it is necessary. We prefer to face criticism rather than risk the loss of life because we failed to act. The St James Municipal Corporation remains committed to supporting the diversification of attractions, but emphasises that such ventures must be pursued in the right way, with full compliance to the law,” it said.
