OREGON, USA – Jamaica’s Able Mills qualified for the final of the women’s discus throw on Wednesday’s opening day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships after she threw 53.37m in the qualifying round.

Mills, the only female field event athlete in the Jamaican team, extended her best season ever to qualify for the final set for Thursday’s second session.

Mills won the girls Under-20 shot put/discus throw double at the Carifta Games in April, both in personal best marks and says she will need to exceed her bests to make it to the podium.

She was fourth in Group A, throwing her best mark in the first round, an effort she described as “a safe throw”.

“I just was working on some like technical cues to get the discus up and out, but it was good. Felt pretty great,” she said.

Mills fouled her second attempt before ending with 52.38m.

While noting that a personal best in the final would be great, she says getting a medal is the main goal.
