KINGSTON, Jamaica-United States- based Global Humanity Network Inc will officially launch its flagship ‘Beyond the Backpack’ initiative at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus on Tuesday.

Beyond the Backpack is a structured, three-year student support initiative designed to remove preventable barriers that can interrupt a child’s education. The programme recognises that students need more than books and school supplies to succeed. They also need stability, encouragement, mentorship, family engagement, and a community committed to walking alongside them, according to a statement from Global Humanity Network Inc.

The inaugural cohort will comprise 10 Grade 4 students from public primary schools in Westmoreland, St Elizabeth, Hanover, and Trelawny.

Each student will receive support valued at approximately US$2,000 annually for three years, creating a pathway of continuous assistance through the critical transition toward secondary education.

Dr Laxley W Stephenson, a native of Westmoreland and founder, president and CEO of Global Humanity Network Inc, emphasised that every child deserves an equal opportunity to succeed, regardless of the barriers they face.

“Talent is universal, but opportunity is not. Beyond the Backpack represents our commitment to removing barriers, preserving dignity, and ensuring that every participating student has someone who believes in them and is prepared to walk beside them,”said Stephenson.

The programme is built upon four interconnected pillars:

● Access, ensuring that students have transportation assistance, uniforms, footwear, educational supplies, and other essential resources.

● Stability, addressing nutritional needs, emergency hardships, attendance protection, and other challenges that may disrupt learning.

● Advancement, providing mentorship, academic monitoring, tutoring, leadership development, growth mindset reinforcement, and family and school collaboration.

●Sustainability, strengthening long-term partnerships, organisational capacity, accountability, and the continued availability of resources necessary to support students throughout the programme.

Beyond the Backpack is not a one-time distribution initiative. It is a monitored, long-term intervention focused on educational continuity, student retention, personal development, and measurable outcomes.

The August 11 launch will bring together educational leaders, corporate partners, sponsors, mentors, volunteers, parents, students and community representatives. The occasion will formally introduce the programme’s vision, student support framework, mentoring structure, and national expansion strategy.
