OREGON, United States (AFP) — Shanoya Douglas won a silver medal in the women’s 200m and Tiana Marshall won the bronze medal in the 100m hurdles on Saturday’s penultimate day of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, to take Jamaica’s tally of medal to five.

Going into Sunday’s final session, Jamaica won a gold, three silver and a bronze medal.

Douglas, who had won silver in the 100m on Thursday, ran 22.68 seconds (-0.2m/s) but was beaten to the line again by American Mia Maxwell.

This was Douglas’s second medal in the event after she had won bronze two years ago in Lima, Peru.

It took a lifetime best from Maxwell as she completed the double with 22.37 seconds, while her twin sister Mariah was third with 22.77 seconds.

Gary Card failed to add to his tally of medals finishing sixth in the men’s 200m in 20.74 seconds (0.1m/s) as American Tate Taylor also completed the double with another personal best and championship record 19.83 seconds.

Marshall was ecstatic over her bronze in a close 100m hurdles final, where she equaled her personal best 12.97 seconds (-0.2m/s) with American Madeline Cooper running a World Under-20 leading 12.91 seconds with South Africa’s Tumi Ramokgopa taking silver with 12.96 seconds.

The Jamaican Mixed 4x100m relay team lowered their national record for the second time this week, running 41.92 seconds to break the 42.08 seconds they set in the semifinals but placed fifth.

The same team of Justin Stewart, Natrece East, Detarje Morgan and Renecia Stewart contested the final that was won by Italy in a World Under-20 record 41.21 seconds, beating the 41.60 seconds set by Great Britain in the previous round.

Great Britain also ran under the previous record to place second with 41.38 seconds with the USA taking bronze with 41.39 seconds.

David Brown was ninth in the men’s high jump with 2.17m and was made to work hard through the competition, needing two jumps to clear the opening height of 2.06m then got over 2.12m, took all three to get over 2.17m, before failing at 2.21m, which would have been a new personal best.

Meanwhile, Jahvanie Tyrell and Shevaughn Thomas both ran personal bests and qualified for Sunday’s finals of the men’s and women’s 400m hurdles respectively.

Tyrell, who has been one of the surprises of the Jamaican camp in the championships, was second in his semi-final race, running 49.98 seconds, lowering his previous best 50.27 second set at the JAAA national junior championships.

Robert Miller was fifth in his semi-final in 50.89 seconds and did not advance.

Thomas was third in her semis 57.56 seconds, behind Alexandra Stefania of Romania who won with 56.87 seconds and Rania El Hamdaoui who set a Moroccan national Under- 20 record 57.36 seconds.

Maria Crossfield, who had improved her personal best times for 10 straight races, was eighth in her semi-final in 59.47 seconds.
