Jamaica’s acting community has entered a new chapter with the official launch of the Jamaica Actors Guild Association (JAGA), a professional body established to unite, represent, protect, and empower actors while advancing excellence across the country’s performing arts sector.

The association was officially launched on July 30 during a ceremony at Circle the Date in Kingston.

The event attracted a cross section of Jamaica’s creative community, including actors, film-makers, producers, directors, educators, government representatives, and other industry stakeholders.

Founded to strengthen the acting profession, JAGA aims to advocate for fair working conditions, promote professional standards, support career development, encourage ethical practices, and foster greater collaboration across Jamaica’s film, television, theatre, and digital media industries.

The launch received strong endorsements from several leading figures in the creative sector, reflecting growing support for the development of Jamaica’s entertainment industry.

Special guest speaker Dorothy Cunningham addressed attendees, while Adrian Atkinson served as moderator.

Representatives offering support included Kevin Jackson, of the Jamaica Film Commission; Dr Ava Brown, founder of the Black River Film Festival; Latoya Foster, of the CHASE Fund; Jollywood CEO Kanhai Condison; and cultural economy specialist Deborah Hickling Gordon.

The evening also showcased Jamaica’s artistic talent through performances by Omaall and Ngozi Wright.

Speaking at the launch, JAGA President Michael Nicholson described the association as a significant milestone for the country’s acting fraternity.

“The establishment of JAGA reflects our commitment to creating greater opportunities for actors while advocating for professionalism, fairness, and sustainable growth within Jamaica’s entertainment industry. Together, we are building a stronger future for Jamaican performers,” Nicholson said.

Chairman Cornelius Grant said the organisation represents more than the formation of a professional association, “It is the beginning of a movement dedicated to protecting the interests of actors and raising the standard of our profession. We invite actors, industry professionals and partners to join us as we work together to shape the future of Jamaican acting.”
