ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — A 68-year-old man succumbed at hospital a week after he was struck with a piece of board allegedly by his grandson during a family dispute in Middlesex, just west of Lacovia in St Elizabeth.

Police named the victim as Lawrence Smith, a resident of Middlesex.

A police report said about 6:00 am on August 3, Smith intervened in an altercation when he reportedly saw his grandson squeezing his granddaughter’s throat.

Police said the suspect then reportedly armed himself with a piece of two-by-four lumber and struck Smith to his left hand, right arm, and ribs, causing bruising, swelling, and pain.

Police said the suspect fled the community and the injured man turned up at the Lacovia Police Station to report the matter and complained of severe pain.

The injured man was admitted to the Black River Hospital where he died Monday evening.

On Monday head of the St Elizabeth division Superintendent Coleridge Minto told the Observer Online that police will continue to increase their domestic violence interventions in communities.
