OD recognition is a full-circle moment, says Robert Livingston

OD recognition is a full-circle moment, says Robert Livingston

For Robert Livingston, being made a member of the Order of Distinction (OD) is more than a national honour. It is a moment of recognition that has brought a lifetime of music, sacrifice, and service to Jamaican culture full circle.

The veteran producer and music executive is among this year’s recipients of national honorees being recognised for his contribution to Jamaica’s music industry.

For a man who has spent much of his life working behind the scenes to help building Jamaican talent, the significance of being honoured by his homeland is not lost on him.

“I’m elated,” Livingston said. “It’s one of those feelings that just overwhelms you in the best way.”

The announcement came as a surprise to Livingston, who said awards were never something he actively pursued.

“I never really put my mind on honours and awards, but I put in the work, and so I definitely believe I’m deserving and I’m especially grateful,” he told the Jamaica Observer.

That work has taken Livingston across decades of Jamaican music history and into the international arena.

He played an integral role in the careers of Super Cat and Grammy-winning superstar Shaggy, while his production and management work has also extended to artistes including Rayvon and Chris Martin.

As far as specific projects are concerned, Livingston’s fingerprints can be found on songs that helped carry Jamaican sounds into international spaces, including Shaggy’s Boombastic.

For him, however, the real reward was never simply seeing his name attached to a successful project; it was the opportunity to contribute to music he loved.

“I love music, I’ve been doing this my whole life, and to be honoured by my country is special,” he said.

Now, after years of helping others collect accolades, Livingston will have the opportunity to stand on the receiving end of one himself. And that is perhaps the part of the honour that touches him most.

“I’m most happy that I’m here to collect it myself and share the moment with my loved ones and the people who have supported my music and have been here throughout the journey,” he said.

For Livingston, being alive to experience the moment gives the honour an added significance. Too often, he noted, people who have made invaluable contributions are celebrated only after they have passed.

“To receive it in front of the nation and the people I’ve carried in my heart all over the globe will be something beyond words,” he said. A lot of times people are honoured after they’re gone. I’m happy I’ll get to share this moment with Jamaica… My family and colleagues are probably more joyful than I am.”

Outlining that he simply followed his dreams, the multi-talented producer said he’s particularly pleased that his career was built on integrity.

I’m happy with my choices and this award shows I made the right decision with music,” he said. “I believe my younger self would be proud of my accomplishments. I stayed focused and kept my passion alive. I put my heart into my work, did what felt right, and never compromised the creative process… I’m proud of who I’ve become and that’s the biggest plus. When I go to bed at nights, I’m comfortable knowing I did things with integrity and that’s more than my younger self could ask for.”

Yet Livingston is also conscious that the honour extends beyond him. For decades, producers, musicians, songwriters, engineers, and other creatives have helped build Jamaica’s musical legacy without necessarily receiving the same visibility as the artistes standing at centre stage.

“Creatives like myself who work behind the scenes don’t usually get the recognition they deserve,” he said. “They’re not in the spotlight often and so they rarely get their flowers.”

In an era in which listeners can consume music without necessarily knowing who wrote, produced, arranged, or engineered it, Livingston sees the OD as a victory for those whose names can sometimes disappear into the credits.

“When you’re a musician, a writer, a producer, recognition isn’t always given, because people don’t even read credits anymore,” he said. “This award is for them as well. This is one feeling I wish all of my colleagues get to experience.”
