More than 200 killed in road crashes this year, says ITA
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Deaths resulting from motor vehicle crashes have now gone past the 200-mark, reaching 202 as of Thursday, August 14.
This is according to the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) in its latest crash statistics released on Friday.
The deaths have resulted from 174 fatal crashes.
Despite the number, this represents a 15 per cent decline or 36 fewer deaths when compared to the similar period in 2025, ITA said. Fatal crashes are also down 16 per cent.
Since the start of the year, 49 motorcyclists have been killed, representing 24 per cent of overall fatalities. Forty-six deaths have been logged among pedestrians, accounting for 23 per cent of all fatalities; private motor vehicle drivers have seen 45 deaths among their ranks, accounting for 22 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year, while their passengers account for 29 deaths or 14 per cent.
Thirteen passengers of commercial motor vehicles have also been killed this year; they make up six per cent of all road deaths. Five pedal cyclists and five pillion passengers have also been killed on the nation’s roads.
Meanwhile, vulnerable passengers – made up of pedestrians, pedal cyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers – account for 52 per cent of all fatalities combined since the start of the year. Overall, passengers account for 25 per cent of fatalities since the start of the year, with males and females accounting for 83 per cent and 17 per cent respectively of fatalities this year.
