WATCH: Paulwell raises concerns over airport runway expansion
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Member of Parliament for Kingston East and Port Royal Phillip Paulwell has raised concerns about what he describes as inadequate consultation surrounding the development project at the Norman Manley International Airport.
Speaking at his annual constituency conference on Sunday at Vauxhall High School, Paulwell said the issue was particularly concerning as Port Royal has recently experienced flooding during high tides, with seawater now invading sections of the roadway.
“I am concerned about the lack of proper consultation before the project at the airport started which is to expand the runway into the Kingston Harbour to accommodate larger vessels,” Paulwell said.
“I am concerned because recently we are seeing the phenomenon in Port Royal where during high tide the water is now invading the roads in Port Royal.”
Paulwell said he believed a different approach should have been taken to the airport expansion, including extending the runway towards the Caribbean Sea.
He said, however, that he believes it is now too late for that approach to be pursued.
“So we are going to engage them on that,” Paulwell said.
