England thrash Pakistan by an innings and 103 runs in first Test

LEEDS, United Kingdom (AFP)—England launched their post-Bazball era with an innings and 103-run thrashing of Pakistan in the first Test at Headingley on Friday.

Seamers Ollie Robinson, Jofra Archer and Josh Tongue took three wickets each as Pakistan, who had been 51-2 in their second innings, lost four wickets for 25 runs on the way to being dismissed for just 135 before tea on the third day.

Robinson and Tongue took all 10 wickets between them in Pakistan’s meagre first-innings 171.

The recalled Robinson, who captains Archer at county side Sussex, had match figures of 8-80, while Tongue finished with 8-89 in what was just England’s third victory in their last 11 Tests.

England are now 1-0 up in a three-match series, with the second Test at Lord’s starting Thursday.

Brief scores:

Pakistan 1st Innings 171 (A Shafique 61; J Tongue 5-46, O Robinson 5-51)

England 1st Innings 409 (H Brook 91, J Cox 73, J Root 66, D Lawrence 51; Ali Usman 5-95, Khurram Shahzad 3-133)

Pakistan 2nd Innings 135 (O Robinson 3-29, J Tongue 3-43, J Archer 3-50)

Result: England won by an innings and 103 runs

Series: England lead three-match series 1-0
