Jamaica eye back-to-back CFU Under-14 titles
JAMAICA will be seeking back-to-back Caribbean Football Union (CFU) Under-14 Boys Tier 1 Challenge Series titles when they take on Haiti in Cap Cana, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, today.
Both teams qualified for the final after contrasting wins in Friday’s semi-finals. Jamaica edged Bermuda 1-0 to extend their run of clean sheets to four games, while Haiti recorded a resounding 6-1 win over hosts Dominican Republic.
Jamaica’s Head Coach Vassell Reynolds told the Jamaica Observer they were well aware of the threat posed by Haiti but said they were up for the challenge.
“The Haitians, I thought, was the team to beat from the second day of competition. They are a very good team technically and physically but we are always confident in our abilities,” he said.
Reynolds remains confident the young Reggae Boyz have what it takes to defend their title.
“The fact that the team shows improvement is enough for us to feel confident of doing well in the finals,” he said.
“Nevertheless we may need to play our game, or close to our best game, to get the result we desire. We will sit and put a plan together and hope the players can execute to the best of their abilities.”
The Jamaicans have yet to concede a goal, beating St Kitts/Nevis 4-0 in Monday’s opening game before edging Aruba 1-0 and beating Curaçao 2-0 in the group stage.
They will be ready for Haiti after surviving a tough semi-final against a disciplined Bermuda outfit, and Reynolds said they expected that challenge.
“After watching them and looking at their stats we thought they would pose a good challenge — and that they did,” he said. “There were a couple of good goalscoring opportunities that we should have taken but failed to do so, and that made the game a little more difficult for us.”
The winning goal came just after the start of the second half from in form Tai-Sean Headley, who has scored in three of the four games played.
Headley headed home a looping cross from inside the six-yard box in the 37th minute, two minutes into the second half.
