El Salvador declares alert due to drought linked to El Nino
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador (AFP) — El Salvador declared a state of maximum alert on Tuesday due to a drought linked to the El Nino phenomenon, which has caused crop losses, authorities said.
The measure activates monitoring, surveillance and aid efforts for affected communities.
El Nino is a weather pattern that raises surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean, generating global changes in winds and rainfall as well as erratic weather conditions.
