Gordon stands with St Andrew East Central business owners after fire at Superior Parts dealership
KINGSTON, Jamaica—Member of Parliament (MP) for St Andrew East Central Dennis Gordon is expressing solidarity with residents, business operators and families affected by a fire that engulfed the Superior Parts dealership Thursday afternoon on Hagley Park Road.
Gordon in a statement commended the men and women of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Jamaica Constabulary Force and other first responders for their bravery and continued efforts to bring the fire under control, while urging residents to follow the guidance of emergency personnel and avoid the affected area where possible.
“My heart breaks for the business owners, workers and families in East Central St Andrew who are watching their livelihoods go up in flames today. I commend our firefighters and first responders who are working under extremely difficult circumstances to protect lives and property,” Gordon said.
The MP noted that the fire, which began at Superior Auto, has spread to neighbouring businesses and affected homes in the area. He also highlighted the added challenge posed by the current drought and water shortages, with water trucks reportedly deployed to assist firefighting efforts.
“This tragedy comes at an especially difficult time. We understand that more than 100 people could be left without work, with the new school term less than two weeks away. These are families and workers who now face significant uncertainty, and they will need support,” Gordon said.
Gordon is calling on the Government and relevant agencies to urgently assess the damage and provide assistance to affected residents, workers and business owners.
Gordon said his constituency office will also be compiling information on those impacted to identify their immediate needs, provide assistance where possible and facilitate representations for further relief and support.
“This is a moment for all of us to stand with the people of East Central St Andrew. My constituency office will do everything within its capacity to assist those affected, advocate on their behalf and ensure that they are not forgotten,” Gordon said.
