KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Jamaica Constabulary Force on Thursday conducted a major operation to destroy counterfeit goods worth millions of dollars.

While the JCF did not state where the operation was conducted, it noted in a statement that this is a significant step in combating organised crime and the illicit trade network.

The operation was carried out by the Transnational Crime Investigation Division (TCID) of the Specialised Investigation Branch (SIB) in partnership with the Anti-Illicit Trade Desk of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce.

During the joint exercise, a significant number of counterfeit goods were destroyed, such as fake clothing, fake footwear, illegal cigarettes and other counterfeit consumer products which the SIB had earlier seized as a result of its targeted enforcement operations.

Highlighting the deeper criminal implications of the counterfeit market, Deputy Superintendent of Police Troy Duare, divisional commander of the TCID, emphasised that the illicit trade is far from victimless.

“The manufacturing and sale of fake goods serve as direct channels for financing gangs and supporting other violent criminal activities. Apart from the economic harm, these unregulated products, especially illicit cigarettes and poorly made clothing, present serious health and safety hazards to the public; today’s action shows our commitment to destroying the financial base of these criminal organisations while safeguarding Jamaican citizens.”

President of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Emile Leiba commended the collaborative effort, noting the vital importance of protecting the nation’s economic integrity.

“The destruction of seized illicit products sends a clear message that counterfeit and illegal goods have no place in Jamaica’s legitimate marketplace,” Leiba stated. “Removing these products from circulation protects consumers, supports compliant businesses and safeguards government revenue critical for national development.
